Overview & History

Overview & History

In 2000s, the early years of digitization, industry experienced significant changes, with highly specialized teams and productions distributed across the globe.

Collaboration remained largely analog. Teams would gather in a room to review footage alongside the director and department heads, with time-stamp reference numbers running at the bottom of the screen.

To address this challenge, a platform was developed in 2003. Initially, it focused on enabling users to take notes while reviewing clips. However, over time, advancements led to the introduction of additional features. As a result, the platform gained popularity among filmmakers and production crews.

Problem Space

Problem Space

1. Legacy System Constraints
One of the biggest challenges was dealing with the app’s old codebase. Some modern UI/UX improvements just didn’t fit within the technical limitations. To tackle this, the design team worked closely with developers to understand what was possible. We found creative workarounds and compromises that still allowed for a fresh, updated look without overhauling the entire system.

2. Balancing Business Goals & User Needs
At times, the business goals seemed at odds with what users wanted. Through regular open discussions with stakeholders, we strived to find a balance—ensuring the redesign met business objectives while genuinely improving the user experience. Compromise and clear communication were our go-to strategies here.

3. Handling Frequent Iterations and Feedback
Constant feedback and design revisions sometimes felt like a never-ending loop. To streamline this, the design and product team established structured feedback cycles with clear deadlines.

4. Ensuring Consistency in UI/UX
With so many changes across different parts of the app, maintaining a consistent look and feel was challenging. I created a design system with reusable components, which not only saved time but also kept the visual language coherent throughout the app.
